SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTIONS

United Nations is an intergovernmental organization whose responsibility ranges from developing friendly relations and maintaining international peace among nations, achieving international cooperation to serving as a center for harmonizing the actions of nations.

United Nations University  scholarships are offered to international students with genuine interest in studying and research venture. Financial aid and grants in terms living allowance, Free Tuition and Health insurance are provided for the selected students.The UN Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) offers an advanced (MSc degree) program and a Doctorate degree program to provide students with enabling environment and produce key researchers in the field of science and Art. The United Nations University Scholarships are for excellent and well accomplished applicants from developing countries with demonstrated need for financial assistance.

Interest applicants can select courses from those offered by UNU-IAS and,if interested enroll in dual courses in other leading universities in Japan such as the University of Tokyo, Sophia University, International Christian University, and Yokohama National University.

PhD Scholarship

The duration of the PhD programme is a three-years. Hence in the programme, adequate care would be taken to produce scholars and researchers who will drive the advancement in the field of Science and Art. The curriculum of the programme is to take an innovative approach to sustainability thereby propelling a better understanding of the issues by incorporating global change perspectives especially as relates to climate change/ Management and biodiversity.

Masters Degree Scholarships

In the study programme, students are endowed with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to contribute to solving challenges of communities and the economy at large. With an innovative and multidisciplinary approach, the vision of the programme is to integrates methods and resources from the natural and social sciences, as well as the humanities.

UN Masters scholarship has a provision for a monthly allowance of 120,000 JPY which would cover the international students’ living expenses for a duration of 24 months. This also covers the travel costs and visa handling fees, and health/accident insurance costs respectively. The scholarship recipients also receive a cover for tuitions
Based on the performance of the student the amount of monthly allowance may be changed.

Scholarship Qualification

  1. Prospective applicants must be a citizen of developing countries of Africa and Asia who have demonstrated  strong need for financial assistance in the application.
  2. Applicants who are currently living in Japan under a working visa are NOT eligible for the scholarship
  3. Applicants who want to pursue a second master’s degree at UNU-IAS are not eligible for the scholarship
  4. Prospective applicant must be a recent graduates, professionals and practitioners with the sole intent of contributing meaningfully to the governments, civil society, the private sector, and/or the UN and other international organizations in fulfillment of the 2030 UN sustainability goals.
  5. Interested applicant must have obtained atleast 90 ECTS.

Study Location: Japan

Timeline

The programme starts in September, and by July of the second year students must complete the course requirements in fulfillment of the degree requirements.
